The dime store

Posted by

We have had a large eBay store for many years. As our eBay business has trended more towards hobbies such as trains, diecast cars, model kits etc., we decided to separate the dimestore business into a separate website. We have an incredable amount of NOS merchandise accumulated over the years. Only a small portion is listed on the dimestoretoys.com website so far, but we will add more as quickly as we can.

I am always thrilled to make a warehouse find or discover a long lost inventory. I will be telling some of the stories of these finds in future blogs. There is much that is compelling about vintage dimestore items. They are generally quite inexpensive and affordable to collect. They are new yet very old- a glimpse of daily life many years ago. They are often colorful and make a great display or decoration.

From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, most small toys and other dimestore items were made in Japan (which is why at one time japanese products had a reputation for being small and cheap!). As Japan grew in prosperity and began to manufacture a higher class of goods, production shifted to Hong Kong. In the early 1980s a similar sea change occured and the dominant maker became China. Late 70s and early 80s Chinese production is often called "early China"

I hope you enjoy browsing through our store.
